FOR PARENTS

At BTO, we offer guidance and support for your child/children in a safe, supportive environment. During programming your child is offered opportunities to learn and grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Through complimentary tutoring, access to counselors, structured activities and play we build children’s coping skills, grow their resiliency, and ease them through the developmental stage of safely growing their autonomy. We understand that as parents, you play a crucial role in shaping your child’s future, and that’s why we are here for you and your child every step of the way.

Creating a Safe Space for All: Rules, Policies & Procedures

At Brookline Teen Outreach (BTO), we are committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and respectful space for all youth ages 10 to 18. Our program is built on compassion, growth, and mutual respect. Everyone who walks through our doors—students, families, volunteers, and staff—is part of a community where safety and belonging come first.

To make sure every student can enjoy a positive and productive experience at BTO, we have clear policies and a supportive system in place to guide behavior, resolve conflicts, and address safety concerns. These policies are based in research and designed to help youth grow in emotional regulation, accountability, and positive decision-making.

Our Core Rule: Respect

We ask everyone at BTO to follow three simple principles:

  • Respect yourself
  • Respect others
  • Respect the space

Behavior Expectations & Warning System

We use a three-warning system to help students understand expectations and redirect their behavior. This approach gives youth the chance to reflect, learn, and reset.

🚦 3-Warning System

1st Warning: Staff will kindly ask you to stop and offer a better option.
2nd Warning: You’ll be reminded again and told that the next step is leaving for the day.
3rd Warning: You’ll be asked to leave for the rest of the day. You’re welcome to return the next open day.

⚠️ Students will be asked to leave the program for the day for:

  • Physical fights or threats
  • Bringing drugs, vapes, or alcohol
  • Unsafe or destructive behavior
  • Reaching 3 warnings in a day

Suspension & Disallowance

Multi-day suspension happens when unsafe behavior continues. Before returning, students must meet with staff to plan for success and agree to follow the rules.

Permanent disallowance (expulsion) may happen if a student:

  • Continually breaks rules
  • Threatens others’ safety
  • Is involved in serious or illegal behavior

Students or guardians can appeal this decision after 6 months, but reentry to the program is not guaranteed.

🚨 Threats to Safety

We take all safety concerns seriously. If someone—student or adult—poses a threat, whether in person, online, or in the community, we may suspend or ban them to protect the well-being of everyone in the space.
